Swimmy, Theatre for the Very Young – Aug 4 - 19, 2017

Journey with us to the depths of the ocean as our Theatre for the Very Young series continues this season with the subtly beautiful tale of Swimmy, based on the Caldecott Honor book by Leo Lionni. Being a different color doesn’t stop Swimmy from teaching his fellow fish to think “outside the box.” His uniqueness is just the thing to inspire his school to work together to ward off impending danger. Swimmy may also just inspire our youngest audiences to join in this imaginative under water adventure.

Swimmy by Leo Lionni is produced with permission of Nora Lionni. By Leo Lionni © 1963, © renewed 1991.

Created by Elise Langer and Liz Schacterle with Director Jason Ballweber.

“Like a good picture book, the show is bursting with life and invention.”  (Jay Gabler, TC Daily Planet)

Artistry is pleased to partner with nationally recognized Open Eye Figure Theatre to welcome young children and their families into the Black Box with the imaginative play, Milly and Tillie. This “45 minutes of silliness and surprises” (Star Tribune) is a perfect first live theater experience for elementary school-aged children that will also delight their older companions. A “light and fanciful but rich and accomplished” work (Twin Cities Daily Planet), the play follows the antics and adventures of title characters Milly and Tillie as they set out for a picnic and find the unexpected.

Make a Morning of It!

Did you know that our friends at the City of Bloomington coordinate an amazing Farmer's Market every Saturday morning in the summer? Held in the east lot of the Bloomington Center for the Arts, the market is a great place to support local growers, grab a cup of coffee and a pastry, and hear some live music. Parking on Farmer's Market Saturdays can be tricky, so we encourage you to come a little early to secure a spot - and while you're at it, enjoy a snack at the market and pick up some veggies for supper - all before the show even begins! For more information on the Bloomington Farmer's Market, please visit their wepage, here: https://www.bloomingtonmn.gov/pr/bloomington-farmers-market

Performances on Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. and on Sundays at 4:00 p.m.

First viewed as a carnival sideshow freak, he is ultimately embraced by the highest levels of English society. As Merrick struggles to understand what it means to be human, he imparts on others a lesson about dignity and ultimately proves that true beauty lies in the eye – and the soul – of the beholder.

Presented as a part of the Minnesota Fringe Festival.

United States Senator from Minnesota, Paul Wellstone is in for the fight of his life. Eleven years after his first election in 1990, where he promised he would only serve two terms in office, the country's political landscape is shocked by the events of 9/11, and the various political establishments seek to politicize the event for their own gains. Complicating matters is his increasingly distant relationship with his wife and family, battling not only his brother's mental illness but his own physical illness, and insecurities over his legacy and contributions to the world.

Join us for a musical retrospective in the style of RENT, Hamilton and Next to Normal, reflecting on the life and times of Paul, often referred to as the "conscience of the Senate" for his steadfast belief in honesty, hope and fairness for all. Featuring five original musical numbers from the team that brought you "A Mariokart Named Desire," Fringe Festival's Audience Choice winner of 2016 for Strike Theatre, and one-half of the team that brought you "Pocahontas (Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Mouse)," chosen for Freshwater Theatre's fourth annual Fringe Festival remount in 2015.

DISCLAIMER: This play is a fictionalized account of the life of Paul Wellstone. While great care has been given to ensure respect towards Paul and his family, some artistic license has been taken with the events and people portrayed in the show.

In his new show, The Pursuit of Awesome, David Harris performs unusual stories, stunts, and physical comedy. Why? Because it will be awesome! David always wanted to be awesome. In 1983, he tried to ride his Huffy bicycle up a tree. Had he made it to the top it would have been awesome. In 1985, he took jazz dancing lessons at Colleen's School of Dance. Why? Because he thought he signed up for Break Dancing lessons and that would have been awesome! In 2014, he learned how to balance a knife on his tongue. Why? Because the path toward awesome is easily confused with the path toward being reckless and weird.
