Organization overview: Park Square Theatre (PST) has been a creative home for young people in St. Paul and the metro for decades. We believe that young people are artists, makers, and doers. They need to belong to and contribute to their world. When young people make art together, they change themselves and the world around them for the better. PST offers camp, class, and production experiences for young artists entering PreK to adulthood.

Position Description: PST seeks 4-5 qualified individuals who have interest in theatre education and experience in youth work to join our team as Classroom Assistants (CAs) during the 2023 Summer Camp season. We also have an emergent need to hire for Spring Classes, Saturdays April 13th- May 18th. This position pays $15/hr, is open to anyone 16+, and is ideal for some high school, college students & early-career professionals. Preference will be given to candidates who successfully complete the application process and are passionate about Performing Arts, Education, Youth Work, and related fields. PST’s Summer Camp Season runs June 17 - August 21 and Classroom Assistants can expect to work an average of 4-7 full-time weeks. There are also opportunities to support our team with administrative tasks. This position is in-person, temporary, seasonal, and not eligible for benefits.

 

Position Summary: Be part of a summer program which provides hands-on experience in theatre education. Assist Teaching Artists with activity facilitation, classroom management, student engagement & supervision, and more. Receive training, support, and mentorship throughout the summer. Walk away from this program with a greater understanding of youth work, theatre education, and teaching artistry.  

 

This position is ideal for: those who are looking to gain experience in arts-centric youth work by collaborating with young people, teaching artists, classroom assistants, and arts administrators. To be successful in this role, you must enjoy navigating a fast-paced work environment where you remain active & social throughout the day, successfully accomplish a variety of daily tasks, frequently problem-solve, and continuously support young people who are in pre-k through middle school. 

 

Spring at Park Square: This spring, Park Square will hold classes for students PreK-6th Grade over a six week session, meeting on Saturday mornings. The classes run Saturdays April 13th-May 18th, 2024. Classes take place at our facility located at 20 W 7th Pl, St Paul, MN. 

 

Summer at Park Square: This summer, Park Square will engage in artmaking experiences with 800+ young people, ages 4-18, over nine weeks of camp. Summer Camps run in weeklong sessions and will be held at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church at 700 Snelling Ave S, St Paul, MN 55116. Throughout the summer, Park Square Theatre employs a diverse pool of Teaching Artists, Classroom Assistants, and Office Administrators to support our programs. Position Responsibilities:

  • Work all sessions for which you are scheduled for the full length of the programming time. 
  • Model power-sharing and develop supportive relationships with students, teachers, classroom assistants, administrators, and caregivers.
  • Actively create & maintain safe, inclusive, and creative learning environments where all students feel a sense of agency & belonging. 
  • Support Teaching Artists with activity preparation, facilitation, and management.
  • Lead morning check-in, class transitions, lunch & recess supervision, and afternoon check-out, adhering to PST’s safety best practices.
  • Assist in navigating classroom needs including behavior concerns, illness, injury, emergency, or teacher requests.

 

Skills & Qualifications: 

  • Verifiable experience working with young people in group sizes of 10-20 students.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in collaboration with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and show leadership.
  • A strong understanding of student safety, privacy, & wellbeing best practices. 
  • Ability to memorize and track information including dates, times, locations, student information, and class information.
  • Ability to exert a high-level of energy, sit, stand, bend, twist, lift, walk, and run for 8 hours each day.
  • Customer service oriented.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Reliable transportation to and from the camp site
  • A working phone and email which is checked regularly.
  • A good sense of humor with the ability to take things in stride and be flexible.

 

In order to be considered, candidates should have no major conflicts June 17 - August 21 between the hours of 8:00am-5:00pm, Monday-Friday. There will be no work requirements on weekends, in the evenings, or during the week of July 1-5. Priority to candidates who are available to commit to at least 5 of the 9 weeks of programming. This position requires a full-time (40 hour) commitment during the weeks you are scheduled to work, but you will not be scheduled to work all weeks of the summer. 

 

Anticipated Work Dates: June 17-August 21 (One day of paid staff training in late May-Early June)

Shift Days and Hours: Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm including one 30-minute break
Wage: $15/hr
