Jesus Christ Superstar is one of the greatest musical theatre works of all time. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s iconic rock opera will be presented in a fresh, vibrant, passionate, and electric style inside the re-opening of a newly renovated, high-tech, and stylish theatre.
Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Jesus Christ Superstar has wowed audiences for more than 50 years. A timeless work, the rock opera is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.
Loosely based on the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, Jesus Christ Superstar follows the last week of Jesus Christ’s life. The story, told entirely through song, explores the personal relationships and struggles between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, his disciples, his followers, and the Roman Empire.
Century College’s Theatre Playhouse production of this infamous rock opera is going to be told in a riveting, surprising, and eye-opening way. This globally loved rock opera is going to be cast and performed in a totally inclusive, all gender and status celebrating style alongside (and interacting with) the live onstage rock band.
This production will be about the power of today and about the changes we all need to push to make for a better tomorrow.

Audition Format:
Song: 16-32 bars of any pop or rock song (it does not need to be from a musical) where the auditioning individual can demonstrate their vocal range, tone, and personality. Bring marked sheet music. Accompanist will be provided. No acapella singing auditions.
Dance: Be prepared to dance a series of steps and combinations taught by the choreographer. Note: There is a significant amount of Dance and Creative Movement in the production.
NO Monologues Needed.
Headshots and resumes welcome but not necessary. Photos will be taken onsite at the auditions, and auditioners will be asked to complete an audition form.
Character Breakdown:
Vocal labeling noted after each character below may be adapted based on gender and range of the actor cast. The word “Traditionally” after each character only notes the vocal range based on the gender in which the character is most commonly cast. This production is not necessarily casting roles based on that commonality. There will be NO discrimination in casting based on gender, orientation, ethnicity, status, belief, or culture.
- Jesus of Nazareth (Traditionally a Rock Tenor, A2-G5) is a vibrant, passionate, kind yet affirmative leader who understands his mission from God but, along with his strength and determination, also demonstrates vulnerability, sadness, joy, and love.
- Judas Iscariot (Traditionally a Rock Tenor, D3-D5) is the famed betrayer of Jesus, but is also one of the apostles who loves Jesus the most. The role requires an actor who can communicate the inner conflict the character experiences throughout the musical, as Judas struggles to find a solution that will provide a pathway for Jesus’ mission for mankind while at the same time alleviating the socio-political turmoil that is mounting all around them. The actor must effectively be able to communicate a range of emotions including angst, love, doubt, anger, joy, duty, guilt, and passion all within moments of one another.
- Mary Magdelene (Traditionally Mezzo-Soprano, F3-E b5) is an individual who unexpectedly realizes she is falling in love with Jesus and is not sure how to deal with this feeling. The actor must be able to communicate sincere care, love, frustration, eloquence, passion, allure, self-doubt, and fear.
- Pontius Pilate (Traditionally a Rock Baritone, A2-B4) is governor of Judea who initially sees the actions leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus in a dream and is then confronted with the situation in reality. The actor must be able to effectively communicate the conflicting inner turmoil of a self-aware politician and a moralist who, in the process, demonstrates power while experiencing the emotions of rage, fear of consequences, weakness, and resolve.
- King Herod (Traditionally a High Baritone, C#3-G4) is the King of Galilee of whom the arrested Jesus is presented before to learn their judicial fate. King Herod is a very bawdy, flashy, over-the top character. The actor playing the role must be very confident, seemingly self-assured, a good mover, charming, and funny.
- Caiaphas (Traditionally a Low Bass, C#2-F4) is a strong and intimidating chief priest who sees Jesus as a rebellious mob leader who is destructive to the power and order of the status quo. Caiaphas is the oppositional instigator who seeks to bring Jesus down in order to maintain their own authority. The actor playing this role must be able to communicate feeling personal fear, be able to project fear on others, and be commanding.
- Peter Simon (Traditionally a Tenor, A2-G4) is one of Jesus's closest apostles. Peter is strong at one moment, and a worrier in the next. Peter greatly loves Jesus but lets the fear of personal safety overwhelm him and infamously denies knowing Jesus three times. The actor playing Peter Simon must be able to communicate relatable love, desire, warmth, weakness, fear, guilt, and humor.
- Simon Zelotes (Traditionally High Baritone, G3-84) is one of Jesus' apostles who, while Simon loves Jesus, sees the mission’s success as one of violent resistance to take down the existing Roman authority in order to save the people. The actor playing this role needs to be able to communicate exuberance and youthful passion for a cause.
- Annas (Traditionally Baritone/Tenor, G2-D5) is, like Caiaphas, a chief priest who sees Jesus, and Jesus’ activities, as detrimental to their continued authority over the people. Annas is underhanded, a plotter, and heartless. The actor playing this role needs to be able to communicate the overwhelming belief that the importance of maintaining power provides justification for immoral and hurtful actions against others.
- Ensemble/Dancers (All vocal types/ranges, and dance skills and styles) will play a variety of roles including apostles, disciples, prostitutes, merchants, soldiers, priests, protesters, correspondents, and more. The actors playing these roles are onstage a great deal of the show in various capacities and need to be able to communicate outrage, passion, anger, joy, confusion, frustration, love, and guilt. There will also be much creative movement and dance.
