Close to Home, written and directed by Sharifa Yasmin, will perform in April 2025 at Pillsbury House + Theatre.  We are seeking three actors to complete our cast.

Rehearsals begin on March 10, 2025
Opening is April 11, 2025
Closing is April 27, 2025

Place: Johns Island, South Carolina
Time: 2022

Character List:

ZARA - She/Her. Trans AMAB. Late Teens. Raised Muslim. Zara, a high school junior, is independent, strong-willed, and fiercely intelligent.  Her quick wit and sharp tongue mask the vulnerability and hurt she feels after being disowned by her family because of her gender identity.

COLT - He/Him. White. Thirties. Born and raised in South Carolina, Colt is a rugged and solitary construction worker with a predilection for dark liquor.  He's a firm believer in self-reliance, but underneath his rough exterior, Colt has a profound empathy for Zara and her situation that surprises even him.

KAYSAR - He/Him. Arab. Thirties. Muslim. An Eqyptian immigrant who now works as a chef, Kaysar is warm, kind, and loyal.  He doesn't trust people blindly, but when he loves someone, he does so deeply and fiercely.  But that caring can become overbearing and judgemental, and his desire to help others often creates more chaos than resolution.

Notes from the Playwright:

Casting: ZARA must be portrayed by a trans femme of color
Characters: The audience is meant to see these characters as stereotypes when we are first introduced to them - the white trash redneck, the Gen-Z teenager, and the Muslim immigrant.  However, each is a fully evolved and complex person and should be treated as such.  Avoid heavily playing into stereotypes and trust the language to convey the character's backgrounds for you.  Bring truth to their story, not their archetype.
