Presented by Theatre Novi Most
  • Drama

Following our acclaimed staging of THE SEAGULL by Anton Chekhov, Theatre Novi Most will present another classic of the European theatrical canon with this complex drama by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, adapted and directed by TNM co-founder Vladimir Rovinsky. The story follows master architect Halvard Solness (Pearce Bunting) and his wife Aline (Barbra Berlovitz) through an existential mid life crisis involving past losses that still haunt and profound fear about the future. The challenges of a bright young woman (Shelby Richardson) seem to bring some answers. But as always, Ibsen keeps us in suspense. This story is highly charged with secret desires, stunning poetic language, Freudian and Nietzschean motives and… there is that troll.

Founded in 1998 by Russian director Vladimir Rovinsky and American director Lisa Channer, Theatre Novi Most is based in Minneapolis and consists of associate artists from New York, Los Angeles, Russia and Minneapolis. Since 1998 we have worked to adapt or create new works for the stage through a rigorous and expansive process of exploration and improvisation. Our methodology combines Russian theatre techniques and traditions and physical theatre methods from the U.S. and Europe as well as integration of story and narratives through playwriting. Our plays tend to use multiple languages and theatrical traditions allowing language to exist side by side with physical expression in the communicating of stories and ideas.

"A splendid, intelligent musical... It's all you can hope for in children's theatre. But the best surprise is that this show is the most adult new musical of the season." – USA Today

Based on the beloved children's book, The Secret Garden is a musical telling of a classic Victorian story. Eleven year-old orphan Mary Lennox is taken to live at the estate of her reclusive uncle Archibald. A deep melancholy pervades the house and its overgrown grounds, but Mary's youthful spirit leads her to find beauty and joy in the place. An enthralling show for adults and a perfect introduction to "grown-up" theater for children, The Secret Garden is a story of spring, renewal, and the happiness a young girl can nurture when she is determined to make things grow.

“You there! Dickens! Dickens, the Christmas Man! With your Scrooge and your Spirits and sudden conversions! Why do you make up such stories?

The taunter is a scraggly, smelly twelve year old boy, one Algernon Charles Swinburne, perched naked atop a graveyard wall. The target of his tirade: Charles Dickens, author, journalist, would-be thespian, and summer neighbor of Swinburne’s parents on the Isle of Wight. This unpleasant encounter between two giants of world literature—one in middle age, the other yet to write the verses that would make his name—spur Dickens to write a tale that takes up Swinburne’s challenge.

To Begin With is the fascinating story of his struggle to create a personal adaptation of the Biblical Gospels to be performed for his children on Christmas Eve 1849. Amid distractions from his family, Swinburne and his own insecurities, he wrestles with how to present the story of Jesus Christ to a brood that ranges from 2 to 10 years of age.

Though he never intended this work to published, the Dickens family agreed to publish it as The Life of Our Lord in 1934 (sixty four years after his death). It is on this book that the one-man play is imagined. It’s a witty, insightful and thoroughly enjoyable look into the mind of a great writer.

Sculptor Arnold Rubek has it all: fame, fortune, a beautiful young wife. Yet his work has descended into mediocrity, and his life has sunk into a pit of boredom. A chance encounter with his muse—the model for his masterpiece and the only woman he ever loved—ignites in him the passions he has long stifled. Art and life play out their conflict as Rubek searches for the man he once was, the artist his muse once inspired. Subtitled "A Dramatic Epilogue," Ibsen's final play is also the last in our series of adaptations by Minnesota playwright Jeffrey Hatcher.

From its opening image in a brash spotlight, The American Clock stiches a fabric of brief scenes performed as a lively vaudeville punctuated with songs, and dance accompanied by an ensemble of talented actors who double as musicians. With melodies like Million Dollar Baby, Sunny Side of the Street, and S’Wonderful, Arthur Miller’s “brilliant theatrical kaleidoscope of Great Depression throbs with joy, laughs and heartache.” As the 2008 recession’s sting is still being felt, The American Clock resonates today with its cautionary tale as well as a renewal of hope. The American Clock opens April 13 playing through April 23 at the Guthrie Theater’s Dowling Studio, and is performed by the University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater BFA 2017 graduating class under the direction of Joseph Price.

Conceived by Andrew Dolan & Hayley Finn | Written by Hayley Finn

Here’s your chance to get inside the head of a character like you’ve never experienced before! Two simultaneous stories. One stage. 70 sets of headphones. A play about loss, family secrets and the things you can’t control.

WHILE YOU WERE OUT follows a woman who lost her mother at a young age as she figures out how to cope with her mother’s absence, stay connected to her past, and carve her own path.

Twenty years after her mother’s death, Bea hungers for more information about the woman her mother was from the adults who knew her best, but her dad’s gift to Bea of her mother’s journal presents the possibility of finding out more about her mom than she bargained for. Fast-forward 30 years, Bea finds sharp-edged memories of her mother harder to conjure, but still feels her mother’s presence in unexpected ways.

The audience, divided into two groups, hears one or the other of the stories through a personal headset, picking up clues about the concurrent tale along the way as the two stories overlap and intersect. This is the second headset-drama created by Hayley and Andrew, who first experimented with the form in PRIVATE PARTY, developed as part of Red Eye's 2015 new works festival.

Mixed Blood presents the Regional Premiere of Qui Nguyen’s sexy and hilarious VIETGONE!

A brilliant mash-up of comic book aesthetics, martial arts, and hip-hop.

Mixed Blood Theatre is proud to announce the final show in its 2016/2017 Season, VIETGONE. In VIETGONE, award winning pioneer of “geek theater” Qui Nguyen brilliantly chronicles the love story of his parents meeting in an Arkansas refugee center after fleeing Vietnam during the fall of Saigon in 1975. The playwright’s journey to understand his parents’ immigrant love story in the wake of war and loss is marked by wit, unrepeatable curses, and a comic book sensibility that ultimately packs an unexpected emotional punch. It’s is a buddy story, a proto-feminist tale, an all-American romance, and a motorcycle road trip adventure that 40 years later revisits how we think about the Vietnam War and its heroes and victims.
