Stone Soup - Apr 21 - May 21, 2017

The classic folktale of the feared strangers who inspire a whole community through the use of one little stone charms its way onto our main stage this spring in a world premiere musical. When war-weary foreigners arrive in the village square, fear and suspicion reign. But as the outsiders start to make soup out of a stone, each of the locals is prompted to contribute to the ever-growing, communal meal. Come share this ageless story with us as it serves up a delightfully poignant reminder that community is built one ingredient at a time.

Aechylus’ Prometheus Bound

Translated By Bryan Doerries

Directed by Denzel Belin

The play tells the story of how Prometheus came to be incarcerated, and how — through continued disobedience — he becomes the most iconic prisoner of all time.

The word marturos in ancient Greek means “witness.” A martyr is a witness. Prometheus was a god who broke the law. For this crime, he was locked away in solitary confinement, a punishment to which the United States is currently consigning approximately twenty-five thousand of the more than two million American citizens who now live behind bars, one of the few first-world countries still deploying this outmoded, dehumanizing punishment for long durations and on such a large scale. It’s as if Aeschylus, too, was saying: This is how it works.

Prometheus Bound is the story of how martyrs are made.

Shahd Elkhier as Prometheus

Candy Box, presented by Mathew Janczewski’s ARENA DANCES is an eclectic gathering of performances, workshops and public showings with some of Janczewski’s favorite dance makers, alongside ARENA’s full-evening work, Picturing That Day.

"With ARENA’s 20-year history, I feel it is my duty to commit myself to developing and sharing the immense talent of the Twin Cities dance community. Making dance is a great labor of love. Sharing the work of other artists with ARENA audiences, extends the support of the dance community to the next generation of talented dance makers and connects us all. During ARENA’s ARTshare residency, ARENA is proud to present the works of SuperGroup, and Robin Stiehm’s Dancing People Company." Mathew Janczewski, ARENA Dances artistic director.

ARENA DANCES will perform Picturing That Day, an unassuming quintet that is a sensory experience inspired by cruise ship entertainment, with artwork of Jim Hodges, and the music of George Gershwin and Irving Berlin.

“Mathew Janczewski’s choreography is beloved for its elegant construction, formal intelligence, and lush grace. In the most classical sense, his work is beautiful.” – Star Tribune

Robin Stiehm’s Dancing People Company will be performing four dances which are a small representation of the many pieces Robin has created in almost 30 years of choreographing. The common thread through these four pieces is a yearning, or perhaps a struggle, through which the dancers find a resolve and a greater connection to each other. Illustrating the beauty and poignancy of human connection has always been a driving force in Robin’s work. Her language embraces clear structure and utilizes a rare musicality. Join Robin Stiehm in a special workshop class on Tuesday, May 2 from 11:00am – 2:00pm.

(untitled) expands SuperGroup’s research into duplicitous action. Combining a simple, clear movement structure with an absurd, realistic living room drama, SuperGroup asks how we keep being with each other and how we make meaning in the in-between spaces: between body and words, between present and future, between cognitive and somatic, between us and you and us and us and you and you. Join SuperGroup for a workshop on Wednesday, May 3 from 11:00am – 2:00pm.

Binky Rudich, his friend Viv, and his almost human sheep Bob, tinker with a two-speed clock with the idea that, as Binky says, "Time on Earth moves at the same speed all the time, but there is another speed, a slower speed, and if we could find it, everything would stand still on Earth and we would spin off." And they do! To Crestview, Fourth World in the Goolagong System, ruled by George Topax and guarded by the Great Space Pandas.

GIRL SHAKES LOOSE
Directed by May Adrales

Why is it so hard to grow up? GIRL is a good girl: smart, beautiful, and a little rebellious, or, as her family would say, “hard-headed.” For the most part, she has played by the rules, finishing college and then graduate school. She is perfectly poised for success, but something is in her way. Floundering in love, life, and career, GIRL goes on a journey to discover what she’s missing, but wherever she goes, there she is. Eventually, GIRL learns that what she’s seeking is herself: powerful, grounded, and so much stronger than she thought. A groundbreaking new musical by Zakiyyah Alexander and Imani Uzuri, GIRL Shakes Loose is the soulful story of one woman’s search for herself. Featuring the lush poetry of Sonia Sanchez and a stirring original score, you won’t want to miss this world premiere. Brimming with hope, humor, and headstrong passion, you’ll cheer GIRL on, remembering your own journey along the way.

Pulitzer-prize winning playwright, David Mamet, pens this colorful children’s sci-fi fantasy full of vibrant characters and hilarious dialogue perfectly suited to our second annual Theater for Young Performers production.

Combining a simple, clear movement structure with an absurd, realistic living room drama, SuperGroup asks how we keep being with each other and how we make meaning in the in-between spaces: between body and words, between present and future, between cognitive and somatic, between us and you and us and us and you and you. Sculptor Arnold Rubek has it all: fame, fortune, a beautiful young wife. Yet his work has descended into mediocrity, and his life has sunk into a pit of boredom. A chance encounter with his muse—the model for his masterpiece and the only woman he ever loved—ignites in him the passions he has long stifled. Art and life play out their conflict as Rubek searches for the man he once was, the artist his muse once inspired. Subtitled "A Dramatic Epilogue," Ibsen's final play is also the last in our series of adaptations by Minnesota playwright Jeffrey Hatcher.

Minnetonka Theatre presents the 'Ship of Dreams' musical masterpiece...Titanic

Directed by Trent Boyum

Music and Lyrics by Maury Yeston, Book by Peter Stone

Winner of five Tony Awards including the award for Best Musical, Titanic is set on the ocean liner RMS Titanic which sank on its maiden voyage. The sinking of the Titanic in the early hours of April 15, 1912, remains the quintessential disaster of the twentieth century. A total of 1,517 souls—men, women and children—lost their lives (only 711 survived). The fact that the finest, largest, strongest ship in the world-called, in fact, the “unsinkable” ship-should have been lost during its maiden voyage is so incredible that, had it not actually happened, no author would have dared to contrive it.

In a stunning chamber musical as massive as the ocean liner that shares its name, Titanic tells the stories of the people on board the legendary steamer and the men who got them there. Spanning all classes, Titanic captures the stories from the whole range of humanity aboard the ship: from workers in the boiler room to first-class attendants, from the poorest passengers, who scraped together their life savings to purchase third-class tickets to America, to some of the wealthiest men of the Victorian age, including John Jacob Astor and Benjamin Guggenheim. Full of memorable characters based on the real men and women on the ship, Titanic is a powerful, complex look at the making of a tragedy

Are we entering our New Normal, or is this just a phase? Is ‘whitelash’ real, or just another piece of ‘fake news’? Pillsbury House Theatre commissioned five new 10-minute plays by local writers responding to the deeply partisan split on the direction of our country. In polarizing times of national upheaval and civil unrest, how do we deal with competing truths? Where does the election leave us, as individuals, as communities, as a country? The Great Divide is a personal, powerful and visceral response to the partisan animosity that has become our post-election reality.

April 15 - May 14, 2017

Book and Lyrics by Marsha Norman
Music by Lucy Simon

Directed by Lisa Channer

"A splendid, intelligent musical... It's all you can hope for in children's theatre. But the best surprise is that this show is the most adult new musical of the season." – USA Today

Based on the beloved children's book, The Secret Garden is a musical telling of a classic Victorian story. Eleven year-old orphan Mary Lennox is taken to live at the estate of her reclusive uncle Archibald. A deep melancholy pervades the house and its overgrown grounds, but Mary's youthful spirit leads her to find beauty and joy in the place. An enthralling show for adults and a perfect introduction to "grown-up" theater for children, The Secret Garden is a story of spring, renewal, and the happiness a young girl can nurture when she is determined to make things grow.

Winner of the Critics Circle Award and multiple Tony and Drama Desk Awards, this glorious comedy is a unique laugh-out-loud mix of satire, schtick and stupendous physical comedy. In the heart of 1960's England, charming and doltish Francis, fired from his pop band, unexpectedly finds himself with two new jobs and two new bosses, who are connected to each other in wildly improbable ways. Mistaken identities, outrageous farce, love triangles and inspired lunacy enusue! This splendidly silly new play has been hailed as "comic perfection!" Featuring Four Humor's Jason Ballweber (a.k.a. "Ham" from A Hunting Shack Christmas)!

A poignant, lyrical celebration of land, love, and the American immigrant experience.

1920. Inge Altenberg journeys to America to marry a bachelor farmer, sight unseen. But in the wake of WWI, Inge’s German heritage turns her new neighbors against the match. Under cathedral skies, the determined young immigrant and her stoic farmer fight for their lives, facing their own misgivings and the harshness of an unforgiving land. A lyrical celebration of hard-won independence and a reflection of generations past, Sweet Land reminds us of who we are - and where we came from.

Conceived by Andrew Dolan & Hayley Finn | Written by Hayley Finn

Here’s your chance to get inside the head of a character like you’ve never experienced before! Two simultaneous stories. One stage. 70 sets of headphones. A play about loss, family secrets and the things you can’t control.

WHILE YOU WERE OUT follows a woman who lost her mother at a young age as she figures out how to cope with her mother’s absence, stay connected to her past, and carve her own path.

Twenty years after her mother’s death, Bea hungers for more information about the woman her mother was from the adults who knew her best, but her dad’s gift to Bea of her mother’s journal presents the possibility of finding out more about her mom than she bargained for. Fast-forward 30 years, Bea finds sharp-edged memories of her mother harder to conjure, but still feels her mother’s presence in unexpected ways.

The audience, divided into two groups, hears one or the other of the stories through a personal headset, picking up clues about the concurrent tale along the way as the two stories overlap and intersect. This is the second headset-drama created by Hayley and Andrew, who first experimented with the form in PRIVATE PARTY, developed as part of Red Eye's 2015 new works festival.

Offenders. Shawn and Sandra have a little gate cash, an overworked case officer, and the weight of their turbulent pasts. The system says their debt is paid, but the eyes of a daughter, of former friends, of passers by, say the ledger is still in the red.

nimbus’ Mitchell Frazier and Josh Cragun examine the stories of two Twin Cities lives facing the uphill battle of reentry. Of hopes buffeted by written and unwritten rules, haunting memories and rooted resentments, mistakes that continue to ripple outward even after years locked away from society. When the system, the stigmas, and even the good intentions of others conspire to hold them back, what will these “offenders” do to restore their self worth, renew relationships, and find forgiveness in a landscape of fear, mistrust and doubt?

Featuring Ernest Briggs, Ashe Jaafaru, Calli Kunz, William PanKratz, Julie Phillips, Dana Lee Thompson, David Tufford, and Richard D. Woods

Mixed Blood presents the Regional Premiere of Qui Nguyen’s sexy and hilarious VIETGONE!

A brilliant mash-up of comic book aesthetics, martial arts, and hip-hop.

Mixed Blood Theatre is proud to announce the final show in its 2016/2017 Season, VIETGONE. In VIETGONE, award winning pioneer of “geek theater” Qui Nguyen brilliantly chronicles the love story of his parents meeting in an Arkansas refugee center after fleeing Vietnam during the fall of Saigon in 1975. The playwright’s journey to understand his parents’ immigrant love story in the wake of war and loss is marked by wit, unrepeatable curses, and a comic book sensibility that ultimately packs an unexpected emotional punch. It’s is a buddy story, a proto-feminist tale, an all-American romance, and a motorcycle road trip adventure that 40 years later revisits how we think about the Vietnam War and its heroes and victims.
