A SteppingStone Theatre for Youth World Premiere!

by Ricardo Gamboa

Jimmy is just like every other boy on the block—except he can move things with his mind. It’s a power he hopes can make him rich, famous. So when his mom, who came to Chicago without proper documentation, lets him join little league, Jimmy performs miracles. Pretty soon, people are talking about him as much as they are about the disappearances plaguing the community. But, on his 13th birthday, when his mother also goes missing, Jimmy must learn to use his powers for something else besides cosmic home runs. He teams up with two super-powered siblings who have been avoiding living in shelters to rescue his mom, the other “disappeareds”, and discover who is behind the kidnappings.

Written by Jones Hope Wooten
Directed by Eric Morris

This touching comedy centers around five Southern women who became friends on their college swim team. The group sets aside a long weekend every August to recharge their relationships. Free from husbands, kids and jobs, they meet at the same beach cottage on North Carolina's Outer Banks to catch up, laugh and meddle in each other's lives. The play begins 22 years after they graduate from college. "The Dixie Swim Club" focuses on four of those weekends and spans a period of thirty-three years. As their lives unfold and the years pass, these women increasingly rely on one another, through advice and raucous repartee to get through the challenges (men, sex, marriage, parenting, divorce and aging) that life flings at them. And when fate throws a wrench into one of their lives in the second act, these friends, proving the enduring power of 'teamwork', rally around their own with the strength and love that takes this comedy in a poignant and surprising direction. It is really a study in friendship and how it grows and changes through the years.

Jones Hope Wooten are the authors of “Golden Girls” and “Savannah Sipping Society”

Minneapolis Musical Theatre heads across the river to St. Paul to produce “Daddy Long Legs” at the Historic James J. Hill House on Summit Avenue. “Daddy Long Legs” features music and lyrics by Paul Gordon and a book by John Caird (both nominated for Tony Awards in 2001 for their work on “Jane Eyre”) and is based on the 1912 novel by Jean Webster. This charming two person chamber musical follows Jerusha Abbott, who has grown up in an orphanage but is sent to college by a mysterious benefactor so she may learn to be a writer. Along the way, she emerges as a fiercely independent, intelligent “New Woman.” Amanda Weis, who last worked with MMT as Music Director for the smash hit “High Fidelity” at The Electric Fetus in 2018 will be directing the production. The James J. Hill House will provide the perfect, period-appropriate, intimate setting for this unique turn-of-the-century love story. Tickets on sale now at aboutmmt.org.

Is it a comedy? A drama? An American fable? Well, it’s all of that — and more — because it’s a look into the unique mind of Hertel Daggett, a recluse who lives in a junk pile and talks to dead animals as the owner of an abandoned pet cemetery. But his monologues and philosophical musings are interrupted when a smarmy realtor uses Hertel’s ex-wife and long-lost mother in a plot to develop his beloved cemetery into a shopping mall.

Directed by Miriam Monasch, the cast includes: Ian Fyfield, Meri Golden, Josh Jabas, and Stacey Poirier.

A powerful play exploring British colonialism in southern Africa and the use of Christianity for cultural disruption.

Set in 1896 Rhodesia, a young girl whose father has passed away is to be traded, by her uncle, to an older man with ten wives in exchange for a number of goats. She escapes this forced marriage by taking refuge in the home of an African teacher in the Catholic church. In exchange, she is given a new name, forbidden to practice her traditional beliefs, required to wear clothing of the colonizers, and, eventually, is cut off from her family to prove her Christian faith. As tensions in the surrounding villages grow, THE CONVERT explores the struggle between tribal customs and the ways of the British settlers, between traditional African beliefs and the Christianity brought by the colonizers. As tensions rise in the nearby villages, resistance could mean death.

“After producing ECLIPSED nearly a decade ago, we have been pursuing the rights for THE CONVERT and we couldn’t be more thrilled to embark on this adventure,” says director Wendy Knox. “In some ways, THE CONVERT is a very unFrank play: it’s a big, historical, realistic, three-act play! Thematically, however, it’s right up Frank’s alley. During auditions, I had two actors, who were unfamiliar with Frank’s work, ask why I was doing this play. I answered that I thought the play was an excellent exploration of the roots of white supremacy, and that the play had much to contribute to the larger conversation we are still having, and need to be having today.”

“The Convert is shown…to be a work considering questions of racial, political and religious identity and assimilation with a provocative intelligence …” —The Guardian

“Where do you belong? It’s a question that just about everyone has to face, sooner or later, in Danai Gurira’s The Convert. And the further we go, the more complex that question becomes. It’s a terrific play — a rich, thoughtful, carefully crafted piece..” —The Financial Times

Last Summer at Bluefish Cove

by Jane Chambers

Produced by Century Playhouse

“Funny” “Groundbreaking” “Honest and Moving”

With Ellen DeGeneres, Lilly Tomlin, Jane Wagner, Harriet Newman Leve, and Portia de Rossi bringing Chambers' play, Last Summer at Bluefish Cove, to Broadway for the very first time later in this 2020 year (it originally premiered Off-Broadway in 1980), where it will be directed by Cynthia Nixon, this will be a play everyone is talking about!

Before it premieres on Broadway, come see Century Playhouse's wonderful production of this amazing play and you will understand why these magnificent, respected, and extremely talented women believe that Chambers' play (forty years after it was written) still needs and deserves to shine with the lights of Broadway for all to see.

Last Summer at Bluefish Coveis the story of a young dissatisfied straight woman who leaves her husband to spend some quiet time by herself, and who unwittingly and naively wanders into the midst of a group of seven lesbians at the beginning of their annual beachside vacation. The friendships, the laughter, the love, the fears of being outed, the difficulties of being gay and how it affects relationships with family, children, parents and careers, the demonstrations of what the painful price could be for a gay life in 1980s America, had never before been told with such respect.

Chambers' comedic dialogue, sensitivity to human nature and tender treatment of her characters help the play transcend preconceptions and show the universality of these women's journeys. (Goodreads)

This landmark play is an emotional, funny, feel-good, and heart-wrenching story that speaks universally to audiences of all genders, identities, and lifestyles in a wonderful, entertaining, and insightful fashion.

Last Summer at Bluefish Cove is broadly considered to be one of the greatest scripts of its genre. With a cast of eight magnificently talented actors from throughout the Twin Cities theatre community, Century Playhouse is thrilled to be producing this important, all-female cast play staged in an intimate setting with the audience physically close to the action of the play. Seating is limited.

Theatre Pro Rata is partnering with The Bell Museum, Minnesota’s official natural history museum, to present Silent Sky inside the Whitney and Elizabeth MacMillan Planetarium. Written by Lauren Gunderson, Silent Sky takes place in the early twentieth century, when Henrietta Leavitt and a group of women “computers” pursued astronomical research at the Harvard Observatory under the supervision of a male scientist. Their work proved to be crucial to the development of the field. Henrietta herself had to balance her dedication to her work with the demands of her family, health challenges, and the possibility of personal relationships. The achievements and difficulties of a woman scientist in a challenging historical period combine in this thought-provoking and engaging play. Come listen to the music of the spheres!
