BRIGHT STAR

Music, Book & Story: Steve Martin

Music, Lyrics & Story: Edie Brickell

Inspired by a true story and featuring the Tony®-nominated score by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, Broadway’s BRIGHT STAR tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and ’40s. When literary editor Alice Murphy meets a young soldier just home from World War II, he awakens her longing for the child she once lost. Haunted by their unique connection, Alice sets out on a journey to understand her past—and what she finds has the power to transform both of their lives. With beautiful melodies and powerfully moving characters, the story unfolds as a rich tapestry of deep emotion. An uplifting theatrical journey that holds you tightly in its grasp, BRIGHT STAR is as refreshingly genuine as it is daringly hopeful.

Blue Water Theatre Company's production of BRIGHT STAR is presented through special arrangement with and all authorized performance materials are supplied by Theatrical Rights Worldwide, 1180 Avenue of the Americas, Suite 640, New York, NY 10036. www.theatricalrights.com.

When a young, liberal, Harvard Law School graduate embarks on a nerve-wracking clerkship with fearsome conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, she discovers him to be both an infuriating sparring partner and an unexpected mentor. John Strand’s critically acclaimed drama asks the question: What does it cost us to suppress our fear and distrust, and sit down with the monsters?

Directed by Stephen O'Toole. Featuring James Ramlet as Supreme Court Justice Antonin SCALIA alongside Kalala Kiwanuka-Woernle as Scalia’s Law Clerk, CAT, and Jonah Smith as Recent Law School Graduate, BRAD. Stage managed by Lauren Volkart with design work by Nate Farley, MaryBeth Schmid, Olivia Lundsten, and Jeremy Stanbary. Weapons instruction by Mason Tyer.

Critical acclaim for The Originalist:

“[THE ORIGINALIST] depicts robust, aggressive, passionate disagreement in a context of respect and developing friendship. It accepts power and winning as measures of success, but decency and kindness as even more important measures of a person. In that regard, it feels like a play we need right now.” —Chicago Sun-Times

Returning to Buttercup as the Dread Pirate Roberts, Westley faces a Sicilian, a Spaniard, and a Colossus! Adventure abounds as the band overcomes the Cliffs of Insanity, Fire Swamp, castle gates, and even death itself. All to find the answer to, "Will true love conquer all?"

It shall be as you wish!

“Ghost Quartet” is a song cycle about love, death and whiskey from Dave Malloy, the Tony-nominated creator of the Broadway hit “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812.”  A camera breaks and four friends drink in an interwoven tale spanning seven centuries, with a murderous sister, a treehouse astronomer, a bear, a subway, and the ghost of Thelonious Monk.  The story draws from several fairy tales and "ghost stories", including Snow White and Rose Red, Edgar Allen Poe's Fall of the House of Usher, and One Thousand and One Nights (commonly known as Arabian Nights). There may also be some Princess Zelda references you might recognize. Cast members present the story and music as a "concept album" and accompany themselves on keyboard, ukulele, guitar, mandolin, banjo, autoharp, dulcimer and 9,000 percussion instruments.

SCREAM it off SCREEN's Short Film Gong Show is a short film competition where audience members decide what gets GONGED (yes, with a real gong) and which local filmmaker wins the cash prize. Votes are cast by screaming out loud. None of the short films are preselected or prescreened; no one knows what will play next, not even the organizers. All submitting filmmakers are required to sit in the audience, surrounded by Minnesota’s toughest critics. This is not a competition for sensitive folks, or anyone that takes life too seriously.

Theatrics are put on throughout the show by the host , Mr. Terry, his interns, a very talented piano man named “King”, and the show’s mascot, a big red mouth named SCREAMY.

When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, he is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. But he’s not prepared for the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, who is determined to exercise control over the town’s youth. When the reverend’s rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren’s reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid. The heartfelt story that emerges pins a father longing for the son he lost against a young man aching for the father who walked out on him.

To the rockin’ rhythm of its Oscar and Tony-nominated Top Forty score, augmented with dynamic new songs, Footloose celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people while guiding them with a warm heart and open mind.

Footloose first burst onto the silver screen in 1984 and proved to be one of the year’s most successful motion pictures. The soundtrack recording reached #1 on the Billboard charts, and went on to sell over 17 million copies worldwide, generating such Top Forty hits as its title song and “Let’s Hear It For The Boy” (both of which received Academy Award nominations), plus “Almost Paradise,” “Holding Out For A Hero,” and “I’m Free (Heaven Helps the Man).” With a screenplay and lyrics by Oscar winner Dean Pitchford, the story focused on young people, much like his previous, and wildly successful movie musical Fame.
