Art in Arms is offering two different foundational stage combat courses this spring: Quarterstaff, and Two-Handed Sword

Quarterstaff: Encompassing a variety of historical styles and aesthetics - ranging from North African tahtib and el matrag, to classic English robin hood, to Shaolin spear, we'll dive into the diverse array of ways to connect the performer to one of the simplest props in existence.  Beyond attacks and defenses, students will learn how to ground themselves for stability and power, as well as deepen their understanding of leverage, angles, and biomechanics. The course will consist of drills and exercises that mix practical application and understanding of combative techniques with the truths of what it takes to safely perform them as part of a compelling story.

Two Handed Sword: It’s finally happened: The SAFD Governing Body has relabeled and revised their curriculum formerly known as Broadsword into Two-Handed Sword.  Drawn heavily from historical martial principles found in many cultures, possibly most popularly European longsword and Japanese katana, this style is featured throughout contemporary storytelling, from the knights of Shakespeare's histories all the way to science fiction laser swords.  This class will get students attuned to moving the weapon effectively and efficiently, engaging the whole body for dynamic storytelling opportunities.

Stage actors don't get the luxury of having a stunt double, and film actors are increasingly lauded for their time spent training in preparation for high-action roles.  These courses are designed to give performers the tools they need to be able to physically perform dramatically effective choreography in a confident, repeatable way.  Whether you're prepping for a combat-intensive show, want to nail that next fight audition, or just want to keep honing your physical acting and partnering skills, these classes can help you.  No prior stage combat experience necessary.
