Job Title: Costume Shop & Prop Room Supervisor

Theatre in the Round:

One of the oldest live theaters in the state, Theatre in the Round Players, Inc. (TRP) has established a national reputation and has received numerous awards for artistic and managerial excellence. As a community theatre, TRP seeks to create inclusive, high-quality arena theatre experiences while providing open entry points to participating in the art of theatre for all levels of experience across its 6-9 mainstage productions each year; free and pay-as-you-are-able workshops and classes; mentoring opportunities; open auditions; and volunteer training.

The day-to-day work environment is collaborative, creative, and supportive across a small and nimble team of 4.5 FTE staff members, providing continuity, structure and support for the hundreds of artists and volunteers that learn and create theatre at TRP.

Position Summary

This position’s primary responsibility is assisting in the work of each show’s costume designer; training & supervising volunteer crew when possible; management of costume & prop facilities (shop, storage, and laundry); and facilitating set, prop & costume rentals.

Hours & Scheduling

10-20 hours/week (including occasional evening and weekend hours), schedule may be flexible as long as meetings and rental appointments are included; exact hours may vary with year-round production schedule.  PLEASE NOTE: This position will start as a job-share & training period with the current Costume Shop Supervisor at 10-15 hours/week, but will move to 20 hours/week no later than August 1, 2024.

Wage Info

Part-Time, hourly position. $16-17/hour depending on experience. Overtime eligible.

Paid Leave/Holidays

Theatre in the Round provides 48 hours of paid Safe & Sick time for part-time employees, accrued annually (up to 80 hours max), and 8 pro-rated paid Holidays (including 2 Floating Holidays).

Volunteer Costume Crew


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Production Costume Support – 40%

Support the success of each production’s costume designer in executing excellent costume design

  • Review costume plot with each show’s designer.
  • Organize and scheduled the completion of plot in accord with designer’s schedule, availability of volunteers, the show and administrative calendars
  • Costume Publicity Photo calls as needed
  • Execute and/or oversee all costume alterations as requested by the designer
  • Assist with costume build as needed
  • Complete costume laundry and repairs during the run of the show
  • Oversee costume & prop strike along with the designers, including arranging dry cleaning

Volunteer Supervision, Training & Education – 20%

Provide a supportive, welcoming, and safe environment for theatre participants to learn and grow in their knowledge and skills in costume and/or prop design and construction

  • Working with costume designer, supervise & train volunteer costume crews in the execution of designs
  • Work with Production Manager to schedule volunteer crew shifts
  • Complete orientations of all costume designers new to the theatre
  • Provide mentorship to new costume designers as needed
  • Teach and/or support occasional costume workshops as scheduled

Facilities, Inventory & Supplies – 20%

Oversee organization and preparation of costume, prop and set stock and costume shop

  • Maintain and stock laundry room & costume shop
  • Oversee costume equipment maintenance.
  • Create and/or maintain costume, prop, and set storage organizational systems with emphasis on costume stock

Rental Management – 15%

Provide excellent customer service & consistency for rental clients

  • Hold regular hours for rental appointments
  • Answer all inquiries for prop, set, or costume rentals
  • Create and/or maintain a system for valuating and tracking rentals
  • Review and update rental policies as needed
  • Work with Executive Director for billing and invoicing of rentals
  • Restock rentals as needed

General – 5%

  • Attend staff meetings, production meetings, meetings of the technical advisory board, and other events as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.




  • 2+ years of experience in costume construction, maintenance, and shop work - required
  • 1+ year of experience in theatre education and/or volunteer supervision
  • Demonstrated supervisory and/or managerial experience
  • (preferred) Experience working as and/or with volunteers
  • (preferred) Prop design and construction experience

  • Proven organizational and time management skills
  • Basic email and computer skills


  • Ability to carry up to 40lbs
  • Requires bending, reaching overhead, standing, and walking
  • Frequent lifting and carrying of costumes, props, and furniture up and down several flights of stairs
