THE POSITION

The Education Programs Manager is primarily responsible for the management and effectiveness of the operations, curriculum and personnel of Guthrie educational programming. The Education Programs Manager communicates and collaborates effectively with internal and external stakeholders to develop, coordinate and evaluate effective programming that achieves stated educational outcomes tied to the Guthrie Theater’s mission, vision and values. Leveraging the artistic programming and resources of the Guthrie, the Education Programs Manager promotes theater arts as an effective educational tool for personal growth and development. The Education Programs Manager cultivates and nurtures participant relationships and effectively delivers quality programming. The typical schedule for the role is Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:30pm, but there must be a willingness to work flexible hours/days, including evenings and weekends, reflective of the dynamic schedule of the theater. This role is eligible for a hybrid schedule.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

1. Program Management    

     Student Matinees

  • Interview, hire and contract Guthrie Teaching Artists and Student Matinee (SMAT) Staff.
  • Supervise, support and evaluate Guthrie Teaching Artists and part-time temporary staff.
  • Strengthen, foster and manage communication with current and new school partners.
  • Develop, articulate and evaluate program experience and ensure quality delivery.
  • With guidance from the Director of Education and Professional Training, serve as an ambassador for the Guthrie and its programs internally, in the community and beyond.
  • Manage current programming and offer input on program development. 
  • Develop Play Guide lessons and activities that enhance students’ understanding of the plays they attend at the Guthrie.
  • Work closely with Marketing team to deliver final drafts of Educational Resources for Play Guides in accordance with publication deadlines.
  • Work closely with Group Sales to facilitate Play Guide delivery to Educators in accordance with school visits for Student Matinees.

     Theater in Focus

  • Interview, hire and contract Guthrie Teaching Artists for curriculum development cohort.
  • Develop curriculum around filmed production that meets academic standards for educators.
  • Supervise and support Theater in Focus cohort with site based and asynchronous work.
  • Manage communications and provide support for teachers who register for Theater in Focus.

      Summer Camps 

  • Work closely with the Artistic, Production and Development teams to plan, design and communicate Educational Programming for each season.
  • Interview, hire and contract Guthrie Teaching Artists, Teaching Assistants and Counselors.
  • Organize Teaching Artist preparation to shape and facilitate planning and curriculum design.
  • Manage educational programming and resources to execute Summer Camps for middle and high school aged students from mid-June to mid-August.
  • Oversee the scheduling, budget and staff management of Summer Camp experiences.
  • Work closely with Marketing and Box Office personnel to manage communication of camp curriculum and programs.
  • Maintain student records, registration forms, and permissions for Summer Camp participants.
  • Manage communications with Summer Camp families and caregivers to ensure camper safety.
  • Provide guidance, support and mentorship to Teaching Artists to ensure quality programming.

2. Administration 

  • Work with key Guthrie staff to ensure the successful operations of Education programming.
  • Work with Audience Services to manage Tessitura builds, scholarships and discounts.
  • Develop budgets in collaboration with the Director of Education and Professional Training. 
  • Manage program expenses and provide updates on registration.
  • Work with HR and Finance to facilitate hiring, contracting and payment of Teaching Artists.

Essential Knowledge and Qualifications 

  • Prior experience in educational programming and project management required. Formal, informal and cross-disciplinary experiences will be considered.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of teaching, curriculum development and school systems is essential. Prior experience in arts administration or theater preferred. 
  • Experience managing and coordinating multiple organizational priorities. 
  • Commitment to fostering and maintaining positive relationships with colleagues, teaching artists, community partners, students and their families.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word). Extensive knowledge of and ability to use technology and CRM software such as Tessitura.
  • Communicates effectively and persuasively in oral and written communication on both an interpersonal and group level.
  • Experience exercising professional discretion and confidentiality.
  • Must be willing and able to work flexible hours/days, including evenings and weekends, reflective of the dynamic schedule of the theater and can budget time within a 40-hour work week.
