Hours & Location
This is a contract Employee position for the following productions in Theater Latte Da’s 2024-2025 with the potential to continue into the 2025-2026 season.
The Head Scenic Carpenter will work primarily at TLD’s scenic shop in Fridley, MN and the Ritz Theater in Minneapolis.
Most workdays will be 9am to 6pm on weekdays with some evening and weekend shifts required. An exact schedule can be provided with some flexibility in scheduling.
The contract dates for this role begin on Feb 7, 2025 and end of June 8, 2025 with hours as outlined below.

Build – Feb 10-Mar 2 – 24 Hours Per Week
Strike/Loadin Prep – Mar 3-16 – 24 hours per week
Loadin & Tech – Mar 17-30 – 24 hours per week
Cleanup/Notes – Mar 31 – Apr 6 – 24 hours
Passion
Prep – Apr 7-13 – 24 Hours
Build – Apr 14-May 4 – 24 Hours per Week
Loadin Prep – May 5-11 – 24 Hours
Strike-Loadin- May 12-18 – 40 Hours
Load-in/Tech – May 19-June 1 – 24 Hours per Week
Cleanup/Notes – June 2-8 – 24 Hours
Job purpose
The Head Scenic Carpenter is the primary builder and scene shop floor supervisor for the Productions. They will work closely with the Technical Director and Carpenters to execute the designs in an excellent and timely manner through the use of carpentry, welding, rigging, and other fabricating techniques. They will also work with the Technical Director to prepare for upcoming projects by conducting research, drafting, and purchasing materials.
Duties and responsibilities
Essential
- Primary carpenter for all projects in the scene shop
- Manage other carpenters during construction, load-in, strike, and note sessions
- Maintain shop tools in a safe and working order.
- Maintain shop cleanliness and organization.
- Actively create a safe and healthy work environment.
Attend First Aid/ CPR safety training(s) provided by Theater Latte Da.
Other/Occasional
- Drafting
- Material Purchasing as needed
- Drive 26' dock truck during build, load-in and strike
Qualifications
Required
- Must have excellent carpentry and fabricating skills with wood, but skills with various materials like metal, foam, plastics and fabrics are preferred.
- Must have a solid understanding of common theatrical practices relating to reading scenic/ build drawings, scenery construction, installation, rigging, and simple stage mechanics.
- Must have a solid understanding of commonly used tools and their maintenance.
- Must be able to lift 50+ pounds
- May be required to occasionally work at heights, in confined spaces, and in hot and cold weather.
- Must maintain a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a DOT physical.
- Must be comfortable driving a fully loaded 26’ box truck.
- Ability to manage and encourage a diverse team of professionals to ensure a successful build process
- Ability to work a varied schedule including evenings and weekends at predetermined times
Preferred
- Drafting experience, especially with AutoCAD
- MIG Welding
Working conditions
The Head Scenic Carpenter will often be working on their feet in the Theater Latte Da shop or Ritz Theater venue with power tools, dust, noise and a variety of materials.
