OUR MISSION: Mixed Blood uses theater to disrupt injustice. We are a social justice organization catalyzing action and change through art. Our work is guided by deep community engagement and rooted in radical hospitality.
SYNOPSIS: The Pasture is set in a church where there is a shrinking congregation. As church attendance shrinks, donations can no longer keep pace with the needs of an aging building. It seems like the writing is on the wall: sell the building and say goodbye to this once vital community gathering space. As the small congregation ponders their options, we learn that everyone in the play is facing home insecurity and that the solution is right over their heads.
The Pasture is audience participatory and invites us to look around at the empty buildings in our neighborhoods and imagine spaces that can sustain our bodies and our spirits. What would we do with those spaces? How can they benefit our communities and our people? And, what policies do we need to put in place to make that a reality?
SEEKING:
JANE (30s-40s any race, female identifying) Young pastor. She’s taken over a church with a shrinking congregation. This was in 2020, just as the COVID shutdown began. Since then, she has struggled to maintain, much less grow, the congregation. She understands that they must sell their building. She knows what she needs to do, now she just has to get everyone on board.
STEPHEN (40s-50s, any race, male identifying) He is a woo-woo developer. Committed to the art of astrology, the smell of patchouli follows him around. He wants to buy the church and convert it into a high-end hotel, making lots of money in the process. He doesn’t like taking no for an answer.
SAM (70s-80s, any race, female identifying). Long time congregant. Having spent her whole life there, she is deeply committed to the church and opposes any idea that doesn’t preserve the church as she’s known it.
TASHA (30s-40s, female identifying, any race). An independent developer. She is staking everything she owns on the purchase and development of the church property, converting the church into a mixed- used, mixed income property. She views this as a path for wealth generation for herself.
LEX (20s, male identifying, any race). Like many of his generation, Lex joined the church, looking for deeper meaning and spirituality. He is estranged from his parents and has been living in the church. He has a big dream that serves for him and others like him: convert the church into a dorm and gym. They live there and tend to the church in return.
AARON (70s-80s, male identifying, any race). He’s a single man who has a long association with the church. He understands that they must sell it, but he advocates that it goes to the community, through a community land trust, in this way keeping to the church’s mission. He lives in an RV on the church lot and is close to Lex, acting as a big brother/surrogate dad.
