Machinal: a play by Sophie Treadwell

A Young Woman lives her life and is trapped by it. Courtship, Marriage, Children: with each prescribed stage she sinks further and further away from the place in her dreams. Her life becomes a struggle, to one day be free.
Originally staged nearly a century ago, Machinal remains one of the great works of modern theatre, and as relevant as ever. Treadwell’s play serves as an unflinching indictment of the small world men expect women to live in and challenges our complicity in it.
