Tap dance has always had deep ties to the music that scores it. Kaleena Miller, in collaboration with her company of dancers, is changing the way those ties are made. Their newest work, Shift, reverses the standard tap dance-music process. Rather than originating with the musicians, Miller’s dancers created an evening-length tap sound score and then handed it over to four different musicians. Each of them then created a separate original soundtrack to accompany the dance.
Kaleena Miller Dance will premiere Shift in four nights of performance at The Southern Theater in Minneapolis as part of its ARTshare program. Each performance will feature the same dance, but different music every night. Audiences are invited to see the fundamental ways sound can influence movement, and what remains intrinsic to dance.
Commissioned music makers include Reid Anderson (The Bad Plus), JT Bates (Alpha Consumer), Alexei Caselle (Kill the Vultures, Roma Di Luna) and Leah Lott (LOTT, Fog).
