ABOUT THE PLAY

Mary's Wondrous Body is a dark comedy with original music about the life and lies of Mary Toft, who captivated the medical community in 1726 by purportedly giving birth to rabbits. In the play, Mary steps into the present to laugh, sing, grieve, and (maybe) tell the truth.

CW: discussion & depiction of childbirth, miscarriage, infant death.

The play is written and directed by Madeline Wall, produced by Wall, Emma Lai, Patrick Brien, and Tia Tanzer, and stage managed by Alissa Barthel and Mariabella Sorini. The acting company includes Sarah Broude, Tessa Dahlgren, Isabella Dunsieth, Nick Miller, Gillian Ness, Emily Rosenberg, Laila Sahir, Tia Tanzer, and Caleb Wagner.

ABOUT THE BIRTH PLAY PROJECT

The Birth Play Project is the brainchild of Madeline Wall, and it serves as a site of ongoing research into childbearing stories in the theatre, based on the principles of reproductive justice and the belief that birth belongs in public memory. The "why" behind the project is best explained through this article, published in the May 2022 issue of the Minnesota Women's Press.

ABOUT THE VENUE

The Elision Playhouse is a performing arts venue in Crystal, MN (about 8 min from downtown Minneapolis) that opened in 2019 and is the home of Theatre Elision. The space serves as a showcase for local talent and an arts education resource for youth and adults. Mary's Wondrous Body will be performed in the Playhouse's unique "cabaret" space.
