Like many of you reading this, I’m not exactly sure what causes me to become smitten with a particular piece of performance. Frankly, I don’t want to know; it’s one of those mysteries that I’m content to keep contemplating for a long time, with a hundred exceptions to any rule we might create together right now. I know that the really juicy stuff makes me ponder the strange and intricate experience of being a human. I know that the performances I chew on for days and weeks and months usually feel a little magical – the everyday is heightened, huge risks are taken, and I feel like I was privy to a bit of a secret. As in, wow! I didn’t know this until you told me or showed me! In these performances there is somehow a balance struck between this giant risk-taking, and an awareness that the audience wants to come along for the ride; I feel included.
