Position Overview
Yellow Tree Theatre seeks a Technical Director to serve as Lead Carpenter for our upcoming production of The Taming. The Technical Director will work closely with the Production Manager and Scenic Designer to oversee the build, installation, and maintenance of the production’s scenic elements.
This production is anticipated to feature a straightforward scenic build, supported by Yellow Tree’s prebuilt stage platform system and stock materials. Yellow Tree Theatre provides a shop space and equipment. The role requires strong carpentry and organizational skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments to ensure the seamless integration of scenic, lighting, and sound elements.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Production Manager and Scenic Designer to plan, construct, and install all scenic elements.
- Lead on-site build process, ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to artistic specifications.
- Supervise and direct overhire carpenters (100 additional labor hours provided).
- Coordinate with the Master Electrician on lighting hang and focus.
- Collaborate with the Sound Designer to plan and place speakers as needed.
- Maintain and organize shop spaces and tools (all tools provided on-site).
- Be present and available during all technical rehearsals.
- Provide spot-repairs or emergency fixes as needed during the run of the production.
- Strike and restore the space at the close of the run.
Qualifications
- Strong carpentry and technical theatre background, with proven experience in scenic construction.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and design renderings.
- Knowledge of safe practices in scenic construction and rigging.
- Familiarity with lighting and sound installation practices (hang, focus, and speaker placement).
- Excellent communication and leadership skills; ability to manage overhire staff.
- Flexibility, problem-solving mindset, and collaborative spirit.
Compensation
- Flat fee: $3,500
- Plus 100 hours of overhire support for additional labor.
